The goal is to survive the zombie waves while the cart keeps moving through the city. Before and between fights you add blocks to the cart and place weapons on them: flamethrowers, traps and other gear. You also manage the cart's energy, so a bigger build is a trade-off, not a free upgrade.
Each wave you beat brings coins. Coins go into upgrades for the cart and its equipment. Poki states that the game gets harder as you go, so the build you start with will not carry you to the end.
